Imperial Amazons Giclee Print

We are donating 100% of the profit from the sale of this print to the Rare Species Conservatory Foundation - Imperial Amazon Project in Domenica (Info below.)

The Imperial is superlative among Amazon parrots in size, elusiveness, and stature. Found only in mature rain forest on Dominica, the “Nature Island” and largest of the Windward Islands in the Lesser Antilles, the Imperial is known locally as the Sisserou, named by Carib Indians-whence the name “Caribbean”-who believed they were reincarnated as parrots and whose culture today survives only on Dominica. The Sisserou, among the most endangered of all parrots, is distinguished both as Dominica’s national bird and as a powerful flagship species for Dominica’s pristine, oceanic rain forest ecosystem-it even appears at the center of Dominica’s flag and on the Coast of Arms. The Rare Species Conservatory Foundation (www.rarespecies.org) and Dominica’s Forestry, Wildlife and Parks Division have been partnered since 1997 to research and conserve the Sisserou-and together helped create the Morne Diablotin National Park (January 2000), Dominica’s third national park and one of the region’s most significant biodiversity preservation efforts ever. This bio-reserve encompasses vast expanses of pristine rain forest and irrevocably protects the prime nesting area for the Sisserou.
